GETTING ACTIVE

If you’re managing a long term health condition, being active is about finding what works for you.

We understand that how you feel can change from day to day. And sometimes, that can make moving more feel like a challenge.

It may be that being active has seemed like a big commitment or something that didn’t feel like it was for you. That’s perfectly okay.

The truth is that you can start small, and you do not have to get moving when you don’t feel up to it. Ultimately, being active is about finding what works for you.

BUILDING ACTIVITY INTO YOUR ROUTINE

Getting active doesn’t need to be about doing traditional exercises. It can just be about doing things that fit into your daily routine, as and when you can.

A lot of us don't have time to go to the gym, and we're not very good at exercising on our own either. The good news is, every way you get moving genuinely matters.

Things like taking the stairs at home, walking to and from the supermarket, or taking your dog out for a stroll around the block all add up. And even little things you can do around the house still count, like getting on your feet during a TV ad break or stretching while making a cup of tea.

Exercise helps you feel better and helps to prevent obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other long term health conditions, but it can be hard to stick with this habit if you're new to it or don't know what to do.

DOWNLOAD THE ACTIVITY WORKSHEETS

We all know that being active is good for us, but it can be hard to stick with a regular routine.

Studies have shown that writing down your activity levels will increase the odds of sticking with an exercise program by up to 300%.

By using this simple, downloadable activity tracker, you can track your activity and get more motivated about doing some exercise.

You will find a copy of the Activity Tracker inside the printed copy of the Playbook.

If you need more copies of the Activity Tracker, you can print this out yourself by clicking the link below or get FREE copies at the Library or The Community Skills Centre.

When you’re managing a long term health condition, being active is about finding what works for you.

ABOUT WE ARE UNDEFEATABLE

"We Are Undefeatable" is a movement supporting people with a range of long term health conditions, developed by 16 leading health and social care charities and backed by expertise, insight and significant National Lottery funding from Sport England. Our purpose is to support and encourage finding ways to be active that work with each person’s conditions, not against them.

Being Undefeatable is understanding that how you feel can change from day-to-day, that everybody’s situation is unique, and that moving more when you can is just as important as accepting when you can’t. We believe that every achievement, no matter how small it might seem to someone else, is worth celebrating.

Getting Started with Being Active

1

FIND ACTIVITIES YOU ENJOY

Doing something you actually like means you’re far more likely to keep doing it. Try a few activities until you find the right thing for you.

Moving more with friends, family members, and others can also help make things more fun.

2

START SLOWLY AND BUILD UP

Don’t expect to see big differences overnight. Even small changes can have a positive impact on your health.

For some people, aiming for a couple of minutes throughout the day can help them get started.

3

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR GOOD DAYS AND MOVE MORE

Each day, listen to your body and do what feels comfortable to you.

Make the most of your good days. On your not-so-good days, you may need to do less. Small amounts of activity all add up.

Whether you are building movement into your day by doing things like taking the stairs or stretching from a seated position, or trying different activities like swimming, chair exercises, or Pilates, it’s all good for your health and wellbeing.
